Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Shanghai for the first time since 2020, as his government steps up efforts to prop up the country’s economy and financial markets.

Shanghai is gearing up for its role as China’s showcase for the May 1-Oct. 31 Expo, whose theme is “Better City, Better Life,” by remaking itself into the country’s most chic and modern city.

Visit Shanghai’s Shikumen lane houses: Head to Xintiandi, an upscale bar and shopping district which incorporates elements of Shanghai’s famous shikumen (stone gate) lane houses.
