Hurricane Erin strengthened back into a Category 4 storm as U.S. officials warned of dangerous rip currents this week.

Storm Erin became the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2025 season, but the name was previously used during one of the darkest days in American history.

The National Hurricane Centre has warned heavy rain could cause flash flooding, landslides and mudslides, saying Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands could be affected on Sunday.

Island communities off the coast of North Carolina are bracing for flooding ahead of the year’s first Atlantic hurricane, Hurricane Erin.

Hurricane Erin, currently a Category 3 hurricane, is moving west-northwest and is expected to turn north on Monday and Tuesday.

Rough ocean conditions will likely cause life-threatening surf and rip currents, the NHC said.
